Measuring Your Home for Siding

To estimate siding quantity, measure each wall section's height and width, multiply for area, then add all sections. Measure from foundation to eave for standard walls; use the triangle formula (½ base × height) for gable ends. Add all areas together for total wall square footage, then subtract approximate area for windows and doors.

Standard windows deduct about 8–12 sq ft each; standard exterior doors about 21 sq ft each. Many siding estimators don't bother deducting — the extra material covers cut waste and J-channel installation anyway.

Vinyl vs. Fiber Cement in Grayson County

Siding is sold in squares (1 square = 100 sq ft of coverage). Exposure width varies by product — double 4-inch vinyl has a 4-inch exposure per course, while 7-inch fiber cement lap has 7 inches.
