What Is a Roofing Square?
A "square" in roofing equals 100 square feet of roof surface. It's the standard unit for ordering shingles, metal panels, underlayment, and starter strips. If your roof area is 2,400 square feet, you need 24 squares of material — plus waste. This calculator converts your home's ground-floor footprint to actual roof surface area, factoring in the pitch multiplier and a waste allowance.
The Pitch Multiplier Explained
Your home's footprint is the flat ground-floor area — but the roof isn't flat. A steeper pitch means more actual roof surface than the footprint suggests. At a 5/12 pitch (5 inches of rise for every 12 inches of run), the multiplier is approximately 1.083, meaning a 1,500 sq ft footprint yields about 1,624 sq ft of actual roof surface. At a steep 12/12 pitch, the multiplier jumps to 1.414.
Measuring your pitch: from inside the attic, place a level horizontally. Hold it so one end touches a rafter. Measure 12 inches along the level from the rafter, then measure straight down to the rafter again. That measurement (in inches) is your rise — the first number in the X/12 pitch designation.
