Why Square Footage Matters for Every Project

Square footage is the foundation of almost every construction estimate. Before you can order flooring, tile, drywall, insulation, or paint, you need an accurate area measurement. Getting it wrong by even 10% means either running short mid-job or overbuying and wasting money.

For most rectangular rooms, the calculation is straightforward: multiply length by width. A 12×14 room is 168 square feet. But real houses rarely cooperate — you'll often deal with closets, bays, alcoves, L-shapes, and irregular walls. For those situations, break the room into rectangles, calculate each one separately, and add the totals.

How to Measure a Room Correctly

Always measure at the floor level, from wall to wall, including the area under built-in cabinets or furniture you plan to remove. For flooring installations, UIR measures the full floor area including closets and any thresholds — even if the flooring stops at a door, you still need material to reach that point.

For oddly shaped rooms, a quick way to handle them: sketch the room on paper, divide it into rectangles, label each section's dimensions, and add the individual areas. You can use this calculator multiple times and keep a running total.

Waste Factors to Know

Raw square footage isn't your order quantity — material waste adds 5–20% depending on the installation pattern:

• Straight-lay LVP or tile: 5–10% waste
• Diagonal tile or herringbone: 15% waste
• Complex patterns, hardwood with lots of cuts: 15–20% waste
• Paint and drywall: 10–15% for typical rooms with doors and windows
