R-Value Requirements for Kentucky

Kentucky falls in IECC Climate Zone 4A, which has specific minimum insulation requirements under the International Energy Conservation Code. For new construction and major renovations: attic floors R-38 to R-49, 2×4 exterior walls R-13 minimum (R-15 recommended), 2×6 exterior walls R-20 or R-13+5 continuous, floors over unconditioned spaces R-19 to R-30.

Batt vs. Blown-In Insulation

Batt insulation (fiberglass or mineral wool) is used in framed wall and floor cavities where studs or joists provide a defined space. Blown-in (loose-fill) insulation is better for attic floors and irregularly shaped spaces. Spray foam is used for air sealing and insulating rim joists, attic hatches, and areas where batts won't fit without gaps.
