Wall Framing Basics
A standard stud wall consists of a bottom plate, vertical studs, and a top plate (double top plate for load-bearing walls). Studs are spaced 16 inches on center for most residential walls — this spacing aligns with standard 4-foot drywall sheets, allowing edges to land on studs. 24-inch spacing reduces lumber cost but limits the ability to mount heavy items between studs.
Load-Bearing vs. Non-Load-Bearing
Load-bearing walls in Kentucky homes typically run perpendicular to the joists and carry floor or roof loads. They require double top plates, headers over all openings, and in some cases, engineered lumber for large spans. Non-load-bearing partition walls can use single top plates and lighter headers. UIR's general contracting team identifies load-bearing conditions before any wall removal or modification in remodeling projects.
Rough Openings for Doors and Windows
Each door or window opening requires additional framing: two king studs (full height), two jack studs (trimmer studs to support the header), a header (sized by span and load), and cripple studs above the header. Add approximately 4 extra studs per door opening and 4–6 per window opening to your calculation. For exterior walls with large windows or sliding doors, consult a framing plan or ask UIR about header sizing requirements.
