Paver Patio Construction Basics

A properly built paver patio requires three layers below the paver surface: an excavated base (typically 6–8 inches deep for the total system), a compacted gravel base (4–6 inches), and a screeded sand bedding layer (1 inch). Skipping the base or using insufficient depth leads to settling, shifting, and paver cracking — the most common failure mode for DIY paver projects.

Choosing Paver Size and Pattern

Smaller pavers (4×6, 8×8) are more forgiving of slight base irregularities and can follow curved edges more easily. Larger pavers (16×16, 20×20) create a more contemporary look with fewer joints and are faster to install but require a very flat, well-compacted base. Random patterns using two or three different sizes — a "random ashlar" pattern — are popular in Grayson County for their informal look on back patios.

Paver Sealer and Joint Sand

After installation, joints between pavers are filled with polymeric sand, which hardens when wet to resist ants, weeds, and washout. A penetrating paver sealer applied after the polymeric sand cures enhances color, repels stains, and extends the life of the installation.
