Baseboard and crown molding are sold by the linear foot or by the stick (typically 8, 12, or 16 feet). Longer sticks cost more per foot but produce fewer joints in a room — a 16-foot wall with one 16-foot baseboard looks better than two 8-foot pieces with a butt joint in the middle. For most Grayson County homes, 8-foot sticks cover the majority of wall runs without joints.

Inside vs. Outside Corners

Baseboard corners are cut at 45° (mitre) for outside corners or coped (one piece butts square, the overlapping piece is coped to match the profile) for inside corners. Professional trim carpenters almost always cope inside corners — coped joints hold up better as the wood moves seasonally and look tighter than mitred inside corners. Crown Molding at Different Ceiling Heights

Standard 8-foot ceilings use 3¼ to 4½ inch crown. 9-foot ceilings typically use 5 to 6 inch crown. 10+ foot ceilings can support crown up to 8 inches wide or even built-up crown assemblies.
