Standard Brick vs. CMU Block

Standard brick (modular, 3⅝ × 2¼ × 7⅝ inches with mortar: approximately 6.75 bricks per square foot) is used for veneer walls, fireplaces, walkways, and decorative features. Concrete masonry units (CMU or "cinder block") — standard 8×8×16 inches — are used for structural walls, retaining walls, foundation walls, and utility construction. CMU is approximately 1.125 blocks per square foot of wall face.

Mortar and Grout

Type S mortar is the standard for below-grade and exterior masonry in Kentucky due to its higher compressive strength and better freeze-thaw resistance. Type N is used for interior veneer and above-grade non-structural work. One 80 lb bag of mortar covers approximately 25–40 sq ft of brick work depending on joint size and profile. This calculator uses a rough 35 sq ft per bag average — verify with your masonry supplier.
