Asphalt Driveways in Western Kentucky

Asphalt is the most common driveway surface in Grayson County for good reason: it handles Kentucky's freeze-thaw cycles well when properly installed over a compacted gravel base, repairs are straightforward, and the cost is lower than concrete. A properly installed asphalt driveway with a 6-inch compacted gravel base and 3-inch asphalt surface should last 15–20 years before needing resurfacing.

The Base Layer Matters Most

Hot-mix asphalt is only as good as what's underneath it. For new driveways, UIR recommends at minimum a 6-inch compacted #304 gravel base over a prepared, firm subgrade. On clay-heavy soils common in Grayson County, a geotextile fabric between subgrade and base gravel prevents base contamination over time. A 2-inch binder course of asphalt followed by a 1.5-inch surface course (rather than a single 3-inch lift) produces a more durable result for heavily used driveways.

Hot-mix asphalt is priced by the ton from local asphalt plants. Plant prices vary with oil prices. Delivery and placement by a paving contractor is typically priced per square foot or as a lump sum.
