What Is a Stair Stringer?
The stringer is the diagonal structural member that supports the treads and risers of a staircase. It's cut from a 2×10 or 2×12 board using a pattern of notches — one horizontal notch for each tread and one vertical notch for each riser. Getting the layout wrong means uneven steps, a staircase that fails inspection, or in the worst case, structural failure. This calculator gives you all the numbers you need before you make a single cut.
Total Rise: The Starting Measurement
Total rise is the vertical distance from the lower finished floor (or grade, for exterior stairs) to the upper finished floor or deck surface. Measure carefully — if your deck is 42 inches above grade, your total rise is 42 inches. This single measurement, combined with your target riser height, determines everything else: how many risers, actual riser height, total run, and stringer length.
IRC Code Requirements for Stairs
The International Residential Code (IRC), which Kentucky has adopted with local amendments, sets these requirements for residential stairs:
- Maximum riser height: 7¾ inches
- Minimum tread depth: 10 inches
- Riser + tread sum: Should fall between 17 and 18.5 inches for comfortable, code-compliant stairs
- Consistency: No riser in a flight can vary by more than ⅜ inch from any other riser
The calculator above shows a code compliance check based on these values. If the riser + tread sum is outside 17–18.5 inches, adjust your tread depth. Grayson County inspectors will verify riser height consistency at inspection — measure twice before cutting.
Exterior Deck Stairs
Deck stairs in Kentucky face additional challenges: ground settling, freeze-thaw cycles, and moisture exposure. UIR's deck and porch builds use pressure-treated stringers rated for ground contact (UC4B or better) and set the bottom of stringers on a concrete pad rather than directly on soil. This prevents the most common failure mode: the bottom of the stringer rotting out.
For a standard deck that's 36–48 inches above grade, a typical 3-stringer layout with a landing midway is common. The calculator's "Number of Stringers" field helps you count the total linear footage of 2×12 lumber you'll need. For a 42" rise with 10" treads, you'll use 5 risers and 4 treads — a stringer about 7 feet long, meaning you'd buy 8-foot 2×12 boards.
