Storm Damage Claims in Kentucky
After a major hail or wind event, the steps you take in the first 48 hours can make or break your insurance claim.
Grayson County gets its share of severe weather — hailstorms, straight-line wind events, ice storms, and the occasional tornado warning. When your roof, siding, or structure takes a hit, the difference between a fair insurance payout and a shortfall often comes down to the steps you take in the first 48 hours.
Document Everything Before Any Cleanup
Before you move a single shingle or damaged board, photograph everything. Walk the entire property. Photograph the roof from the ground (and from the attic interior if safe), all exterior walls, any downed trees, damaged gutters, broken windows, and interior damage. Timestamp matters — date and time metadata on phone photos is often used by adjusters.
Call UIR Before You Call Your Insurance Company
Having a contractor assess the damage before the adjuster arrives means you go into the adjuster meeting with a complete scope. Insurance adjusters are professionals trained to identify damage, but they are also operating under claim minimization pressure. An independent contractor assessment ensures nothing is missed. UIR provides storm damage assessments free of charge.
What the Adjuster Visit Looks Like
The adjuster will schedule a visit within a few days to a week of your claim being opened. They’ll inspect the damage and produce an estimate using Xactimate software — the industry standard pricing tool. You have the right to have your contractor present during the adjuster visit. We strongly recommend it.
Supplement Claims
Once you receive the adjuster’s estimate, compare it against your contractor’s scope. If there are missing line items or underpriced work, your contractor can submit a supplement to the insurance company. Most storm damage jobs involve at least one supplement — this is normal, not adversarial.
Avoid Storm Chasers
After major weather events, out-of-state roofing contractors flood the area. They’re gone in weeks. UIR has been in Grayson County for 29 years. We’ll be here when you need us after the job is done.
